Purpose, Covenant and Values
PURPOSE AND COVENANT
The purpose of City Church is to love God and love others.
CITY CHURCH VALUES
We are committed to honoring God through our worship, sharing the hope found in the message of Jesus Christ, developing a community characterized by love, serving as a transforming presence in our community and becoming fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
God-honoring worship: We seek to honor God and to encourage, challenge and inspire everyone, from skeptics to Christ-followers, with experiences that are biblically meaningful, creative and relevant to everyday life. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Titus 2:1; 1 Corinthians 9:19-23; 1 Thessalonians 5:14; Ephesians 4:11-16; Acts 17:1-4)
Message of hope: The “good news” of which the Bible speaks is that all can have a relationship with God. This hope, a combination of our firm expectation and deepest desire, comes through a relationship with Jesus, whose life, death, and resurrection, rather than our own effort, brings new life now and forever. We will be intentional about connecting with people that are far from God, with the hope of helping as many as possible toward faith in Jesus Christ. (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8-9; 1 Timothy 2:3-4; Luke 15; Zechariah 8:18-23)
Community of love: The Bible tells us that God is love. God commands us to love one another, care for one another, and bear each others burdens. Our priority is to extend grace to all - seeing others as God sees them, treating others the way God treats them, and loving others the way God loves them. (1 John 4:8; Mark 12:28-31; John 13:34-35)
Transforming presence: The prophets challenge us to be agents of mercy and advocates for justice and to pour ourselves out sacrificially for the common good of all humanity. We seek to express God’s love in acts of loving service by caring for the little, the least, the last and the lost and seeking the welfare of our community, city, and world. (Matthew 25:34-43; Zechariah 7:9; Micah 6:8; Jeremiah 29:7; Genesis 12:3)
Fully-devoted followers of Jesus Christ: For the Christ-follower, life transformation is an expectation. We seek to encourage one another to grow in love for God and his Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Empowered by his Spirit, we covenant to demonstrate loyalty to him in God-honoring beliefs, affections and actions. (James 1:23-25, 2:14-17; Ephesians 2:10, 3:13-19; Philippians 3:7-10; 1 John 5:3; Matthew 6:10)
